Attachment Disorders: Understanding & Behavior Management Strategies

Do you know a child with the following behavioral symptoms:

  • lying, sometimes bizarre lies that make no sense or for no reason

  • cheating and denying it

  • stealing

  • aggressive or hurtful to self or others

  • hyperactive or impulsive

  • no remorse or doesn't care what others think

  • destructive

  • doing poorly in school despite intelligence

  • hoarding or stuffing food

  • toileting issues despite being old enough to be in control

  • fascination with blood, gore, violence, death, or evilness

  • no conscience

  • manipulating adults

  • artificially sweet and charming

  • no eye contact or looks right through you

  • stubborn and oppositional

  • angry and aggressive

  • zones out and doesn't pay attention to you

If this child also experienced any of the following in the first 2-3 years of life, you may be faced with an attachment disorder:

  • abuse/neglect

  • hospitalization of self or mother, or extreme illness

  • adoption after foster placement

  • multiple caregivers or moves

  • pathological care that was unpredictable and inconsistent

  • drug exposure or alcoholic caregiver

  • depressed caregiver

  • foster care

It is believed that as many as 1 million children in New York City alone have serious behavioral issues. Attachment disorders are serious but treatable, especially if the child is young enough.

This book was written for parents, foster parents, case workers, and educators that I worked with while treating children with attachment disorders in my clinical practice.

Dr. Cain has over 25 years experience working with children, their families, and educators. At least half of that time was spent researching, studying, and treating children with attachment disorders. Find out what you can do to intervene with your child's problem.
